A general store with a very specific point of view
Twenty-one years, two storefronts, one rule: nothing earns shelf space unless somebody here genuinely loves it. This is how a little Wicker Park shop became the city's designated gift problem-solver.
Family-run since day one
The short version
It started with one stubborn idea
In 2005, Maren Ellison opened a small shop on Division Street with a theory: a general store didn't have to be general. It could carry a little of everything — cards, candles, toys, socks — as long as every single thing had a reason to be there.
The neighborhood agreed. By 2008 the shop was shipping across the country, teaching the internet what real ribbon feels like. And in 2019, after fourteen years of Wicker Park regulars asking for a second location, we opened our doors on Damen Avenue in Bucktown.
The theory never changed. We stock things with a point of view — objects that say something about the person giving them, the person getting them, or this big cold beautiful city we all insist on living in.

2005
Wicker Park opens
One storefront on Division Street, a hand-lettered sign, and shelves with opinions. The radiator clanked. The regulars showed up anyway.
2008
The website learns to wrap
We went online and refused to lower our standards — kraft paper, real ribbon, a gift note. Turns out delight ships fine.
2019
Bucktown joins
A second home at 2415 N. Damen Avenue, fourteen years in the making. The neighborhood adopted us in roughly a week.

Ten thousand things sounds like a lot until you hear how many we say no to. Here's the gauntlet.
Does it have a point of view?
A mug can be quiet, but it can't be nothing. We look for things that say something — about the giver, the getter, or Chicago itself.
Will it survive the giving?
Gifts get shipped, wrapped, dropped, and loved hard. We stock things built for year five, not just for the unwrapping.

Maren Ellison built this place on founder-led selection — no committees, no algorithms, no "trending now" dashboards. She and a small crew of longtime staff pick every item the way you'd pick a birthday present for someone you actually like. Which, it turns out, is exactly what most of them become.
